2009 Current Events

January 4
"The Unknowables and Their Consequences" will be the topic Sunday, January 4 at 10:00 a.m. at the Unitarian Universalist service at Sonora Senior Center, 540 Greenley Rd.  Lloyd Kramer will trace the creation myths of our ancestors and suggest how those myths evolved into our present day theologies. Those theologies have served us well in transforming the unknowables into  affirmative statements about our origins and our future.  Some negative outcomes from these theologies will also be touched on as well. Marguerite Close, soprano, will provide special music, and the choir will also sing.

The services are also aired on Comcast Channel 8 the second and fourth Sundays of the month at 9:00 a.m. The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Tuolumne County meets the first and third Sundays in Sonora, the second and fourth Sundays in Douglas Flat, and in Groveland when there is a fifth Sunday.

Into The Wild -- The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Tuolumne County, South County group,  will meet on Sunday, November 30, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at the downstairs meeting room of the Groveland Library. We read of prophets and leaders of many religions who have left their homes and gone off into the wild searching for tenets on how to live. They have gone to find communion with God, to bring back laws to live by and to find enlightenment. Kathleen Malloy will talk about our own walk on the Wild Side and question if we really need to go to far off places to find these things, or are they perhaps with us all the time. We welcome people of all ages and beliefs to join us. A potluck lunch will be shared after the service. For more information call Kathleen Malloy at 962-7883.

November 23
We meet in Douglas Flat November 23, 2008 where Rev. Craig Scott will lead the congregation in "Looking Ahead:  A Conversation."  The topic explores the challenges we face in this new century, including an economic meltdown, two wars, and a looming environmental crisis. What roles can UUs play as we look to the future?  What is our role in caring for each other and in reaching out to the larger world?  Join us at the Old School House (Community Building), at 1358 Main Street in Douglas Flat at 10:30 a.m.

What if the original meaning of paradise referred to this life? Are humans meant to create an earthly paradise instead of a heavenly one?  Marguerite Close, soprano, will provide special music with Joy Willow accompanying on the piano. There is Sunday School for the children; child care is provided as well. The theme is “Radical Justice – Throwing Away the Key Isn’t the Answer.”  Kathleen Malloy will discuss her prison ministry with men who have been scorned by many and literally voted off the social island. History is mainly written by the ‘victors’ and the life and views of the ‘the losers’ remains hidden. Prisons were constructed to hide and to separate, but what happens when the prisoners are freed back into society?  Join us as we look at: How ‘just’ is our justice? Is society helping to heal and rehabilitate, or are we more interested in punishment? and how can Unitarian Universalists, who believe in the interconnectedness of all, make a difference. Special music will be presented by Nathan Clark, piano, and the UU choir. There is Sunday School for the children; child care is provided as well.
